Located 200 km north of Cali, 2-3 hours by car, Cartago is on the border of the department of Risaralda, about an hour from Pereira or Armenia, with frequent bus service. This relatively non-touristy city of less than 140,000 inhabitants was founded in 1540 and is known for having the warmest sun in the country and the finest embroidery. Its colonial churches have nothing to envy to those of other cities like Mompox, or Villa de Leyva. Another curiosity is the Casa del Virrey, a beautiful house built at the end of the 18th century for the visit of the Viceroy of Spain, which did not take place.
