Hitra is the largest island south of the Arctic Circle and part of the Fosen region, a district of forests, valleys, lakes, cliffs and mountains. Hitra is renowned for its sea fishing. The landscape of this archipelago of 2,500 islands and islets is extremely varied: mountains, forest-covered hills, some 800 small lakes teeming with fish, wave-polished reefs and sheltered coves. Filan is the administrative center of the municipality.North of Hitra, Frøya (meaning "the main island") faces out to sea. The island boasts some 4,000 islets and reefs. The local economy depends on the seafood trade. On the outskirts of the island lies Sularevet, one of the world's largest deposits of cold-water coral reefs.
