A municipality of 24,500 inhabitants, Kristiansund is spread over four main islands. Until the 1960s, Kristiansund lived mainly from dried cod. Being dependent on ferries, its development suffered greatly from its isolation. The Shell and Conoco oil drilling companies based here were involved in the Krifast road project, which was completed in 1992. A stopover in Kistiansund is an opportunity to taste the famous Klippfisk. Here, cod was dried not on fish dryers but on large stones in the sun and wind. Today, Kristiansund is bustling with activity, and a new cultural center and opera house will soon be opening its doors!
