Hitra is the largest island south of the Polar Circle and is part of the Fosen region, a district of forest, valleys, lakes, cliffs and mountains. Hitra is known for its sea fishing. The landscapes of this archipelago composed of 2 500 islands and islets are very varied: mountains, hills covered with forests, close to 800 small fishing lakes, reefs polished by the action of the waves and sheltered coves. Filan is the administrative centre of the municipality.North of Hitra, Frøya (meaning "the main island") is turned up. The island has 4 000 islets and reefs. The local economy depends on trade in seafood products. Around the island is Sularevet, one of the world's largest deposits of cold water coral reefs.
