To the southwest of Trondheim, on Route 710, lies the town of Orkanger, with a population of around 8,100, making it the second-largest town in Sør-Trøndelag, after Trondheim. Orkanger is one of the most important industrial centers in Trøndelag. Major companies include Technip Offshore Norway AS, AS Vigor, Washington Mills and the Thamshavn Elkem AS foundry. Some buildings, such as the Thamspaviljongen, are well worth a visit! Orkanger is a name composed of the prefix Ork, from the river Orkla, and the suffix angr, which in Old Norwegian means "narrow fjord".
