The Ruunaankoski rapids, 30 km east of Lieksa, are renowned for their beauty. Kayaking (class II-III) and rafting are available for thrill-seekers between May and October (about 40 euros per person, bookings and information at www.visitkarelia.fi). In summer, a balancing contest (unstable) brings together the wooden floaters who, standing on a trunk, descend the rapids as best they can: an impressive spectacle and good atmosphere guaranteed! Ruunaa is also the starting point of many possible walks to admire the fauna: otters, deer and sometimes bears.
