Ilomantsi is the Mecca of the Karelian tradition. Its church, dedicated to St Elijah and richly decorated, hosts many Orthodox rituals. The three major Orthodox festivals, accompanied by singing processions(praasniekka), are the main events of the summer (from the end of June to the beginning of September). During the praasniekka, the parish of Ilomantsi attracts many faithful who, after the service, parade under the light foliage of the birch trees. They gather to hear ancient Karelian ballads and dance to the sound of the kantele, a kind of five-stringed zither. Easter is also the occasion for important ceremonies.
