Lieksa, the oldest town in North Karelia, was founded in 1653 by Per Brahe. An important forestry centre, the wood industry is the basis of its economy. In July, the championship of wood floats, a fascinating spectacle! But Lieksa also has superb hiking trails. You can also go canoeing, fishing and rafting. Don't miss the modern church. It is a masterpiece by Raili and Reima Pietilä. The destruction of the old place of worship by fire in 1979 gave these two architects the opportunity to show their talent. It is a fine example of contemporary Finnish architecture.
