Kuhmo is home to around 10,000 inhabitants. In the heart of the secret Kainuu region, Kuhmo is a small town built in the middle of the country's vast eastern forests, close to the Russian border. It's this magical setting that certainly inspired Lönnrot, since it was here that he gave his name to Finland's national epic: the Kalevala. Naturally, the town councillors have played the card to the hilt. For several decades now, the town has been organizing a high-quality chamber music festival, Kuhmon Kamarimusiikki, the oldest and largest in the country, held in mid-July. Not to be missed if you're in the area at that time.
