Chavakachcheri, also called Kullakkadu, located on the A9 road 18 km east of Jaffna, is the second largest town on the peninsula. Its name means "Javanese colony", in connection with incursions of Indonesian origin in the region in the 13th century, at the time of the kingdom of Tambralinga. The city, with a population of about 40,000, was badly damaged during the 1983-2009 civil war. The government and the people of Chavakachcheri have been involved in the reconstruction of the city, but the population remains considerably lower than in the pre-war years. Its crossing announces your arrival in the suburbs of Jaffna.
