Point Pedro, which is the northernmost town in Sri Lanka, is also the third largest town in the region. Its present name was given by a Portuguese settler of the same name. Its Tamil name is Paruthithurai, which means "cotton port", because of the many cotton fields whose production was exported to South India. It has been dormant for many years, but the port of Point Pedro is currently undergoing an expansion project linked to the creation of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal, a vast maritime project between India and Sri Lanka. The landmarks of Point Pedro are the lighthouse, St. Thomas Church, and the Vallipuram Aalvar Temple
