This small locality is adjacent to Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, the three municipalities forming a single agglomeration. Like its neighbours, Kill Devil Hills has a long beach lined with dunes, which extends from wooden homes to tourists during high season, as well as hotels, restaurants and shops. There are several assumptions about the origin of this town's name. According to some legends, he came to the time of the pirates, who had long occupied that part of the coast. It may be that buccaneer, gathered between the dunes on occasion of any kind of permission, have drunk artisanal brandy so strong that it could «kill the devil». According to another explanation, in colonial times, it was common for ships carrying rum, called the devil's kill by the English, to fail on the shores of the region. Local thieves used to steal cargo, which they hid by burying them into the dunes.
