The namesake town of the lake is located at the northeast end of the lake, a few kilometers from Zambia. The city's main purpose is to provide a place for people to live and work, and it is also a place for people to live and work in. The city has since then gathered a number of infrastructures and administrations to deserve this status, but Kariba has nothing of the seaside resort as one imagines it. It is spread out between different neighborhoods along a 12 km long axis, and has no pedestrian center, no charming public square to come and have a drink. The hotel complexes are scattered along the lakefront, well away from each other, while the three main neighborhoods are located in completely opposite areas. The first one, Kariba Heights, is located on top of a hill with a beautiful view of the dam, the Kariba Gorge and the lake. This area was exclusively populated by whites before independence, but now has some of the most beautiful homes in the area and boasts a small shopping center (with a supermarket, travel agency, souvenir store and bank). The second, Mahombekombe township, is much more lively and popular, and is mostly made up of the (often poor) homes of fishermen and the tourist population. Stores, a post office and a bus station are located in Nyamhunga, the westernmost district.
