Nestled along the old scenic road to Nyanga, in a small bowl surrounded by hills, the village of Penalonga looks like a forgotten trading post. Yet the mining industry that gave rise to this tiny town is still active today. The village, founded in 1895, was the first site to be set up in the region for gold prospecting. The mineral caused a veritable rush in this part of Zimbabwe in the early 1920s and almost until the veins were exhausted in the 1960s. In 1968, however, a new deposit was discovered and the mine slowly resumed operations.
