More than 100,000 inhabitants. Despite the 13 km that separate it from Tarragona, Reus has never suffered from the proximity of the regional capital of southern Catalonia. This is for historical and economic reasons, since the city had the privilege - shared with Paris and London - of fixing the price of brandy. In addition, it is strategically located on the communication routes between the interior and the Mediterranean Sea. With its many chic stores and boutiques, especially in Carrer Monterols and Carrer Llovera, Reus has kept its economic vitality. The birthplace of Gaudí (a visit to the Gaudí Center is highly recommended!), Reus is also a modernist scene where Pere Caselles, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Francesc Borràs, José Lubietas and many other architects have left their mark; there are some 27 modernist buildings scattered around the city Reus also has gastronomic specialties, such as white menjar, a kind of cottage cheese with cinnamon, almonds, milk and vanilla, panellets, small cakes prepared for All Saints' Day, and of course, vermut! More information is available at the tourist office, which is located on the first floor of the Gaudí Center and at www.reuspromocio.cat. Friendly welcome and good advice. Festivities. Reus celebrates two patron saint festivals: Sant Pere (June 24-29), and the Verge de la Misericòrdia (September 21-25). Its Festa Major, which coincides with Sant Pere, has been recognized as a "traditional festival of national interest" for being an example of a typical Catalan festival that brings together all the elements of Catalan folklore: a parade of Dwarfs and Giants, wild races of devils in the city, traditional dances and of course, castells! An important event in the life of Reus.
