The main asset of this town is its 13th century castle. Founded by the Livonian order in 1271, it was built as a defensive fortress. It was occupied by Polish troops during the Livonian War, before serving as the official residence of the Livonian king. At the end of 1623, Marshal Hermann von Wrangel became the owner of the castle, gradually transforming it into a Renaissance residence. The castle was burnt down during the Great Northern War and underwent extensive reconstruction in 1750. On this occasion, the castle became a rococo palace. It was destroyed again during the Second World War.
