Like Praia a Mare, Cirella is a popular beach destination. It's less crowded than Praia in summer, but the beach is smaller and you can find yourself squeezed in very quickly. Overlooking the resort, be sure to explore the almost Scottish ruins of Cirella Vecchia, the ancient Cerillae devastated by Hannibal's Carthaginian troops. In 1806 it was destroyed by the French army and has been abandoned ever since. In this ghost town, the ruins of the castle form a small maze, a dramatic setting overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast and the island of Cirella. At the foot of the hill are the remains of a 2nd century Roman mausoleum.
