First coastal stage of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the resort of Praia a Mare spreads its tongue of dark sand over a turquoise sea. But what characterizes it above all is the presence, close by, of the island of Dino. The spectacle offered by this piece of land, located a stone's throw from the coast, to which it is connected by a narrow strip of sand, is quite singular. The island of Dino has several important caves, including the Sardine Cave, the Lion Cave and the Blue Cave. This original configuration has made Praia a Mare one of the most frequented and best equipped resorts of the Tyrrhenian coast. Although it does not have any major monuments, it is attractive for its pleasant seaside atmosphere. The place, already inhabited in Roman times, also preserves the traces of an even older settlement, dating back to prehistoric times. They were discovered in a large cave that today houses the sanctuary of the Madonna della Grotta. The wooden statue of the Madonna della Grotta is kept here and is the object of a deep devotion: every year, on August 15, it is carried in a procession throughout the city and then brought back to the sanctuary by boat, while the beach is illuminated by bonfires and a fireworks show. You can also see the remains of the medieval castle that dominates the site (14th century) and the coastal watchtower, the Torre Fiuzzi, built in the 16th century.
