Comrat, the capital of Gagauzia, has about 20,000 inhabitants and looks like a country town. The name of the town derives from two words of Turkish origin meaning "black horse". In the past, large horse fairs were held here, accompanied by horse races. In Comrat, affinities with Russia are visible, such as the Lenin Avenue and its statue in front of the Parliament. Here people speak Russian and Gagauz, and only a few speak Romanian. In Comrat, you can see the ethnographic museum, St. John's cathedral dating from 1820, the public garden, the Gagauz Glory Alley, the memorial to the soldiers who died in Afghanistan..
