Ceadîr-Lunga was founded by the Nogaï Tatars and is first mentioned in 1589. It is the second city of the autonomous region of Gagauzia and the Gagauz cultural capital, where Mihail Ciachir was born. The Gagauz National Theatre, the pride of the inhabitants, has been promoted "national" to satisfy local cultural needs. A few plays are performed there (most of them in Gagauzia with Russian subtitles). The town has an ethnographic museum, the Church of Our Lady of Kazan and especially in the surroundings a horse breeding farm, known for its Orlov trotters. Almost all the inhabitants speak Russian or Gagauz, but very little Romanian.
