Cernavodă is derived from the slave (more specifically Bulgarian) voda of černa (чернавода in Cyrillic), meaning "black water". It was founded under the name Axiopolis by the Greeks in the fourth century BC as a commercial counter for contacts with the Dacians peoples.Today the Cernavodă nuclear power plant, designed in the 1980 s, is the only Romanian nuclear power plant. It produces about 20% of the country's electricity. Close to this city, huge locks allow the junction between the canal and the river, allowing the barges to reach the Black Sea and the port of Contantza directly, without being forced to pass through the mouth.
