Xpujil is the most important town on Route 186, between Escárcega and Nicolás Bravo, where the bus lines that connect the state of Campeche with Quintana Roo (Chetumal, Bacalar, Tulum, etc.) converge. This is where you can easily rent a car and where you will find the greatest number of hotels where you can spend the night to visit the archaeological areas of the region. The ones on the Rio Bec road (Xpujil, Becán, Chicanná, Hormiguero, Rio Bec) are all close by; Calakmul, on the other hand, is quite far away (about 100 km, 2 hours drive) but many travelers reach it from Xpujil without any trouble. The village is also a great stop if you are an ecotourism enthusiast, as it is from there that the roads lead to different Mayan communities located nearby, which also offer different tourist services (natural attractions, community activities or even alternative accommodation). To do this, there is nothing better than to rely on these local communities. We recommend you to announce your visit: the communities do not live only from tourism and also go about their daily business. The most practical way to do this is to go to the Centro de Información Turistica, which will be able to arrange visits and give you information on the current prices.
