Lake Windermere is the main attraction of Invermere. It is a popular destination for Calgarians (three hours drive away) who come to enjoy the sandy beaches along this very large lake at the foot of the Purcell Mountains. Numerous cottages and campgrounds have been set up along the shoreline and families make picnic tables their own every sunny Sunday. David Thompson built a trading post near the village in 1807. The name of the town of Scottish origin means mouth for "inver", then lake for "mother". Invermere became a must for mountaineers who came for the mountains of the Purcell Range.
