24 kilometres from Cranbrook, Kimberley is very close to the border with the United States. At 1116 metres above sea level, the town is the second highest city in Canada, after Banff. It offers different views, of the Rocky Mountains to the east and the fertile Kootenay Valley. Known as the Bavarian town, Kimberley owes its name to a diamond mine in South Africa, although it built its fortune on lead and silver. Its Bavarian setting is beautifully overrated and Germanic culinary specialties proliferate. Cominco's Sullivan Mine, the last operating mine, closed in 2001. However, there is still an entertainment area in the ski resort, 4 km from the town.
