Developed in the 1970s, following the oil boom, Kananaskis Country is a project designed to promote recreational activities. However, wildlife is still at home here and the 300 species of plants are concentrated in the "small" Bow Valley Provincial Park. At the foot of the Rocky Mountains from Calgary, and about 10 kilometres east of Canmore along the Bow River, everything from rafting or kayaking in the turbulent waters of Canoe Meadows to hiking to Barrier Lake or Mount Lorette Ponds, to golf courses (www.kananaskisgolf.com), including Mount Kidd, has been thought of. Most of the restaurants and hotels are located a little further away in Canmore.
