On the road of El Tica (Honduran border) which leads to Copán, 32 km from Chiquimula, Jocotán is a large Chorti village where one can see these serious faces of small boys and girls, carefully combed hair, the line in the middle with, on each side, a row of four silver pins. This headdress has a meaning. The girl publicly shows that she has not yet given herself to a man. If you meet another girl with a single row of four pins in silver and on the other side of the line, one pin, one can conclude that she has become a woman in the eyes of the Chorti.A high-colour market is held every Sunday on the village square. It is the largest in the dominant mountains of Chiquimula. The inhabitants of the surrounding hamlets, sometimes about ten kilometres away, go to the family, endimanchés.
