The Ilha do Cajú is an admirable synthesis of the diversity of the Américas delta, a true ecological sanctuary. Originally occupied by the fearsome Tremembés Indians, the island came under the control of the Jesuits in the 17th century, then was put up for auction after their expulsion from Brazil. It was sold in 1919 to a young English entrepreneur, James Clark. His descendants created a reserve at the end of the 20th century to ensure the preservation of Ilha do Cajú, which has remained a private property. Today it is a true ecological sanctuary to which only the privileged have access with a reservation in the only pousada of the island.
