Vassouras was the former capital of the coffee valley. It has a population of about 35,000 inhabitants and keeps from its glory days (middle of the 19th century) beautiful vestiges, such as the Barão de Campo Belo square and its beautiful Matriz NS da Conceição church. It has a rich historical and cultural heritage, inherited from the golden era of coffee in the Paraíba Valley, Vassouras has become an important tourist destination in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Part of this urban and landscape heritage has been preserved thanks to a voluntary and effective policy of heritage valorization and is partially classified as a historical monument by IPHAN.
