On the border of Mali and Niger, about forty kilometres northeast of Gorom-Gorom, the large village of Markoye has more than 30,000 inhabitants. It is built on a slight slope leading to a lake that is home to many birds. The village has kept all its charm, thanks to a dense nucleus of small concessions surrounded by earth walls that border winding alleys. Its market, which is held on Mondays, is particularly authentic and colourful. Markoye is also known for its archaeological research, which has uncovered many traces of early occupation, including rock paintings and several dozen objects and fragments.A Facebook page exists to give you a taste and to know the news of the village (Facebook - Markoye village).
