Gorom-Gorom is the central city of the Sahel Nature Reserve. From Gorom, we radiate towards Markoye, Oursi or Déou. It is, for many tourists, the platform from which to visit this beautiful region of the Sahel, but, apart from sleeping, few of them stop there. The old districts are nevertheless magnificent... Capital of Udalan, with about 60,000 inhabitants, Gorom-Gorom, whose name means "sit down", is the largest city in the region, along with Dori and Djibo, the Sahelians' supply centre (especially in terms of fuel). Gorom-Gorom is twinned with the city of Querqueville, in the department of Manche (50).Climate and climate change. It can be very hot and dry, and the dryness is increased by the omnipresent sandy dust that the wind raises. Paradoxically for this arid region, Gorom-Gorom had to face a serious flood in August 2006. Following heavy rains, the Touro dam dike, 4 km from Gorom, gave way and water flowed throughout the city, destroying some 800 houses in the process. These have since been rebuilt, thanks in particular to the help of various NGOs.
