Okayama is the largest city in Chūgoku after Hiroshima. It is an important transit point, as the Sanyo Shinkansen meets the only train line connecting with Shikoku Island. It is therefore an important tourist crossroads to discover this region of the country. The city developed during the Edo period (1603-1867), as a fortified city, to become an important regional power. Today, it is mostly visited for its famous garden, the Kōraku-en, ranked among the three most beautiful traditional gardens in Japan. The castle is located right across the street from it, making it possible to visit them in one day.
