The modern village of Shimonashi is located 4 km from Kaminashi on the main road. From the bus stop, a road leads off to the left to the Gokayama-washi-no-sato (open from April to November) where you can watch the preparation and production process of washi (traditional Japanese paper made by hand mainly from a wood of the mulberry family). Climbing this road for 30 minutes, you will reach Ainokura, probably the most charming village in the area. Ainokura Minzoku-kan displays some handicrafts, including washi.
