Kiso-Fukushima was a gate and barrier on the way to the post office. This town was the most important in the Kiso Valley, which had no less than eleven post houses. These relays also served as refuges for the daimyōs and their entourage of samurai. Today, some old buildings and museums can still be seen there. It is also an access point for hikes around the On-Take volcano.
