This pleasant spa tends to become crowded with tourists during August, who fall under the spell of its traditional inns and open-air baths. The benefits of Shirahone Onsen's waters have been known since the Kamakura period (1185-1333). It is located at a short distance from Shin-shimashima station and is therefore very popular with tourists coming from Matsumoto. It becomes a kind of gateway to this trekking and spa area.
