Although it offers few tourist attractions, Morioka is a pleasant city of just over 300,000 inhabitants, surrounded by high mountains covered with snow in winter. It was the walled city of the Nambu clan's stronghold and thus took the name of Morioka, or Mori agaru sakaeru oka (pile of rich hills). It can be reached in less than 2h20 by Shinkansen from Tokyo. The information center is located near the south exit. English is spoken there. There you will find info about the resorts to the east, Towada-ko and Tazawa-ko lakes, the Hachimantai Plateau, hiking at Nyūtō-san, Tōshichi Onsen and Tamagawa Onsen.
