The charming town of Tōno is linked to the 1910 book, Yanagita Kunio's Tōno Monogatari, or the Legends of Tōno, which describes the magical and mysterious practices of a rural Japan. Also found in the Tōno area are the famous L-shaped magariya houses, where the inhabitants sleep under the same roof as their horses. Tono is about two hours from Sendai by train via the Yamabiko Shinkansen and JR Kamaishi line (change at Shin-hanamaki).
