Onagawa is a small fishing town known for its seafood. The coastal town was severely affected by the deadly 2011 tsunami, which destroyed over half of the town's buildings. Extensive work has been undertaken. The railway station and the shopping street have been completed. The reconstruction of the waterfront into a memorial park is underway. The local authorities have preserved an old police station, overturned by the waves, as a reminder of the violence of the tragedy. The town has regained its colour, with its beautiful train station, public bath, Seapal Pier promenade and shops selling local produce. A touching visit.
