Located south of Kakunodate, the city of Omagari is served by the Shinkansen. The city is only one hour away from Morioka and about 30 minutes from Akita. The city is not very interesting for tourists. However, a very large number of Japanese and international tourists (around 700,000!) go there in August to enjoy the impressive and wonderful Omagari Hanabi festival (www.oomagari-hanabi.com). This fireworks festival is breathtaking. Many fireworkers from all over the country come to compete. The show is completely free and well worth the trip.
