Yaku-Shima is one of the most beautiful destinations in Japan and it was the first of the country to be registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. This circular island of 25 km in diameter has a volcano, the mount Miyanoura-dake, which proudly culminates at 1 940 m. The presence of the volcano causes a cloud atmosphere and particularly humid. There are wonderful walks in the forests of giant yaku, which for younger people are 500 years old.At the top of the mountain, the oldest, a local species of cedar, are 3 000 years old and for the oldest, over 7 000 years old. The airport is located in the east, a few kilometres from the port of Anbō, while the main city in the north is called Kamiyaku. It was in this island that Miyazaki Hayao, the famous cartoon designer and filmmaker, took part, and found inspiration from Princess Mononoké.
