The name Sakurai comes from the well Sakura-no-i located in Oaza tani. There are a few sites in the vicinity of this city between Nara and Osaka that are well worth a visit. Sakurai, with a population of over 55,000, has been an important stop for travelers since the Middle Ages. This region is rich in history, with one of the oldest Shinto shrines in the country, and in specialties, such as Miwa Somen and sake. Sakurai can be reached from Nara by the JR Sakurai line (30 minutes, ¥330), or directly from Osaka Uehonmachi by the Kintetsu Osaka line (45 minutes, ¥640).
