Travel Guide Awaji-Shima

It is the largest of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea, with an area of 595 km². Located opposite Kōbe Bay, it is connected to the north to the island of Honshū by the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the world, which overlooks the Akashi Strait. At the other end of the island, to the south, one enters Shikoku Island via the Ōnaruto Bridge, near the famous Naruto whirlpools. Triangular in shape and relatively flat, the island has specialized in agriculture and floriculture. Onion and narcissus are the stars of it. It is divided into three: Awaji township in the north, Sumoto township in the center and Minami Awaji township in the south.The island is famous for its beaches, fishing activities, seafood but also for its puppet theater (Ningyō Jōruri). It is possible to see 30-minute performances every day in Fukura. One should also admire the water temple of the architect Tadao Andō (Mizu Godō) which can be easily reached by cab from the port of Oiso-kō.
