50,000 years ago, a meteorite crashed into what is now Arizona, destroying all life within a 150 km radius. Although not the largest in the world, its crater - 1.3 km in diameter and 180 m deep - is certainly the best preserved. The impact scattered 300 million tonnes of rock, creating secondary craters that have more or less disappeared over time.43 miles east of Flagstaff, and almost as far from Winslow, Meteor Crater is set back slightly from Route 66. This exceptional site is well worth a visit, not only for its geological aspects, but also for the visual shock it provides.
