In 1875, during the Apache Wars that bloodied the American Southwest (1861-1886), about 1,500 Yavapai-Apache were forcibly removed from the Verde Valley area to the San Carlos Reservation near Phoenix. About 200 of them were able to return to the Verde Valley in early 1900. Today, the Yavapai-Apache are distributed among five tribal communities in the Verde Valley that make up the Yavapai-Apache Nation Reservation (Tunlii, Middle Verde, Rimrock, Camp Verde and Clarkdale). Camp Verde is home to approximately 11,000 residents. People come to Camp Verde for its casino, to see Montezuma Castle National Monument and to visit Fort Verde State Park.
