Seligman was established in 1896 when the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad was laid out. Its name was given in memory of the Seligman brothers, bankers from New York who participated in the financing of the line. A privileged stop on Route 66, the city saw its economy gradually collapse, first when it was bypassed by theinterstate in 1978, then when the railroad line was stopped 7 years later. It is Angel Delgadillo, barber of profession who grew up here, who decided to found the first association of defense of the Route 66 in 1987. We stop for the photo at the Angel & Vilma Delgadillo's Gift Shop which also acts as Visitor Center (the seat of the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona is in Kingman), and to cross the main street (Historic Route 66 - Chino Street), with the very western spirit and lined with numerous stores. Every year in May, the Fun Run brings together all that drives for a three-day rally from Seligman to Topock. For his work promoting Route 66, Delgadillo has been called "The Father of the Mother Road," "The Guardian Angel of Route 66" and "The Ambassador." Angel's story was immortalized in the song "Angel Delgadillo", written by former Kingston Trio member John Stewart in his album "Rough Sketches" and by Finnish singer Mikko Perkoila in his album "Kuusikuutonen - Lauluj legendaariseen Route 66". It is not uncommon to see Angel in the store now run by the rest of the family or to bump into him in the area and have a chat with him. In May, Seligman is the starting point for the Fun Run, a beautiful historic car rally between Seligman and Topock.
