Founded in 1882 with the arrival of the railroad and the first store opened by Thomas Cooper Lewis, Ash Fork grew rapidly with the construction of its first station in 1893. A few years later, in 1907, after the inauguration of a second and more imposing station, the Escalante Hotel and Restaurant became its most prestigious establishment. Designed by Fred Harvey, it included, in addition to rooms, a dining room with a circular counter on the first floor, with the very popular Harvey Girls. It also housed a boutique, a newsstand/reading room and a barber shop. Thanks to the many stone quarries in the area and the train, Ash Fork soon supplied a number of building sites for the construction of structures such as churches and buildings.... It is for this reason that it proclaimed itself, as can still be seen on some signs, "The Flagstone Capital of the World". Despite the added benefits of Route 66 beginning in 1926, Ash Fork lost half its population when the railroad line was moved further north. With the completion of the Interstate Bypass in 1979, the town lost all hope for economic recovery. Today, the town still operates several quarries and businesses dealing in flagstone are easily visible on both sides of the main road. While nothing remains of the Fred Harvey Restaurant and the Escalante Hotel, both destroyed in 1948, Ash Fork is worth a stop for its DeSoto's Beauty & Barber Shop (314 W Lewis Ave) and its beautiful 1958 DeSoto's on the roof of the building (now closed), its railroad memorial (corner of 5th St and Lewis Ave), and for its Ash Fork Route 66 Museum (901 W Old Route 66 ), which also serves as an information center
