Winslow is located on the former Mormon settlement of Brigham City, dating back to 1876. Until the 1960s, it was the largest city in northern Arizona and enjoyed a prime location on Route 66. The town was made famous in 1972 by the Eagles' song Take it easy (although the title was not written here) with the verse: "Well, I'm a standin' on a corner In Winslow, Arizona ". In the late 1970s, the I-40 bypass froze Winslow at the height of his fame. In 1994, the Standin' On The Corner Association was able to secure financing for the acquisition of the beautiful 1929 La Posada Hotel. It was the success of the Eagles that would be the theme of the downtown development that followed. At the corner of2nd Street and Kinsley Avenue, in front of the Standin 'On The Corner gift store, a square has been created with a beautiful mural and a bronze statue of a guitarist from the 1970's to decorate the area. Of course, all three pay tribute to the song. In the center of the intersection, a huge Route 66 sign is worth a photo. A few meters away, the Old Trails Museum, established in the old First National Bank of 1921 can be visited. A little further on, near the railroad line, you can do a short trail leading you to a huge Indian totem pole, in honor of the builders of the city. If you must stay overnight in Winslow, check into the La Pasoda Hotel. Three miles northeast of town, Homolovi Ruins State Park is home to an archaeological site that was occupied from 1260 to 1400 by the ancestors of the Pueblos.
