The site of Dvin can be reached from the city of Artashat, capital of the province of Ararat, at the gates of southern Armenia. Nestling in the vineyards and orchards along the course of the Arabian River, which irrigates the Ararat plain, Artashat is a modest agricultural town that leaves no doubt as to the splendour of the capital founded in 180 BC by King Artaxias (Artaches), on the advice of the Carthaginian Hannibal, who had found refuge in Armenia, according to Greek chronicles. An archaeological site in Verin Artashat is a reminder of this, for lovers of very old stones, but the ruins of Dvin, another ancient Armenian capital, located 5 km north-east of Artashat, are much more telling.
