Travel Guide Gambarie

Lost in the Aspromonte mountains, the village of Gambarie is neither landlocked nor empty. He has taken advantage of his situation and has become not only the «capital» of the Aspromonte Park, but also a summer resort and a renowned winter sports resort. A few ski lifts make it possible to reach the point of Scirocco (1 660 m), a summit from which you can go downhill, while admiring, in clear weather, the sea and the Aeolian Islands. Between two tracks, you will eat local cured sausages, dried tomatoes, accompanied by wine from the country, from the Sicilian grapes. Take care of the road that leads to Gambarie from Reggio di Calabria, particularly winding, and in places very narrow. You will probably pass in front of a monument which marks the place where, on 29 June 1862, Giuseppe Garibaldi was wounded in a confrontation with the regular army when he tried, with his companions, to win Rome on forced march.
