Brienza takes the form of a village clinging to the rock and dominated by its ruined castle. A Lombard and Norman citadel, the ancient Burguntia has preserved a medieval core around a rocky spur crowned by the remains of the Angevin castle, remodeled by the Caracciolo family in the 15th century. The alleys going to the assault of the fortress are spanned by some fine arches. The whole remains very picturesque, although damaged by earthquakes. Brienza is also the homeland of Francesco Mario Pagano (1748-1799), hero of the republican revolution of 1799, to whom the city has dedicated a monument in the square in front of the town hall.
