Grumento Nova is located near the ancient Grumentum, an important Roman settlement along the Via Appia. Traces of this past can be admired in the museum and archaeological park, sometimes referred to as the "little Pompeii" of Basilicata (although its remains are less impressive!). Before that, the site was the scene of a major defeat suffered by the Carthaginian Hannibal against the Roman legions of Caius Claudius Nero in 207 BC. Some have identified the elephant bones found during the excavations as belonging to the pachyderms employed by Hannibal's army; they are, in fact, older fossils ofElephans antiquus from the Quaternary era.
